The Scales

“I’d like to tell a story – not a happy one” he said
“A stranger sending letterbombs once threw me out of bed
I tidied up and wandered out, and you came out to play
I saw you every day
The scales tipped, and they were very firmly on our side”

“You talked of getting married – you were really drunk” she said
“Your sentences were slurring, so we had to go to bed
We giggled in the morning, but there was a price to pay
Later in the day
The scales tipped, and they were very firmly on my side”

A stranger asked for your address – “Yes, here it is” you said
And memories of letterbombs were filling me with dread
I want to say “I love you”, so “I love you” is what I’ll say
But later on today
The scales will tip away, so very firmly on your side

Can we try
To shift the weight, let’s balance

Can we try
To shift the weight, let’s balance
